One of the most common questions I get is, "Why does electrolysis take so long?" The honest answer is that it has nothing to do with the treatment itself and everything to do with the way hair grows.
Hair does not grow all at once. Every follicle moves through its own cycle of growth, rest and shedding, and electrolysis can only treat a hair when it is in its active growth phase. That is why we cannot clear every hair in a single session, even if every visible hair has been treated.
Everybody is different. Hair growth cycles can vary depending on hormones, genetics, age, medication, health, previous plucking or waxing, and the area being treated. The table below is only a general guide to explain why electrolysis takes time.
| Area | General hair cycle timing | What this means |
|---|---|---|
| Upper lip | Around 6 to 12 weeks | Hairs can appear in small waves, so regular appointments help catch new growth as it comes through. |
| Chin | Around 8 to 12 weeks | Chin hair is often stronger and more hormonally influenced, so it may take longer to clear properly. |
| Jawline and neck | Around 8 to 16 weeks | New hairs may keep appearing as different follicles move through their cycle. |
| Sideburns | Around 8 to 12 weeks | This area can have a mix of finer hair and stronger terminal hair, so timing can vary. |
| Underarms | Around 3 to 5 months | Body hair usually has a longer cycle than facial hair, so it can take more time for all hairs to appear. |
| Legs | Around 4 to 6 months | Leg hair can have a longer resting stage, meaning hidden hairs may not appear for months. |
| Stomach | Around 3 to 5 months | Hair may come through gradually, especially if it is influenced by hormones. |
| Back | Around 3 to 6 months | Some follicles may stay dormant for longer before producing visible hair. |
What this means in practice is that consistency matters more than intensity. Coming in regularly, at the right intervals for your area, gives us the best chance to treat each new hair as it emerges and to gradually move toward permanent results.
If you have ever felt impatient with the pace of electrolysis, please know it is not because the treatment is slow. It is because we are working with your body's natural rhythm, and that rhythm cannot be rushed.
